Orientation Workshop for All Interested Students

Meet past mentors, hear about IP issues and licensing from UCSB’s Tech Transfer group (TIA). Get licensing going on provisional patents.
Obtain schedule of events and outline for business idea proposal.

Mandatory Meeting
Sign-up, Learn How to Present Your Ideas

ESB Building, Room 1001, 5:30-7:30 pm.
Sign-up and hear how to present your ideas both in the one page document (includes the guidelines) and in a business plan."
Obtain schedule for legal insight.

February 7

“Marketing” Mentor Night

ESB Building , Room 1001, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.
All student teams drop in with draft summary of idea for a business and talk with marketing experts. Get direct feedback from professionals.

February 14

“Finance” Mentor Night

ESB Building, Room 1001, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.
All student teams drop in with draft summary of idea for a business and talk with financiers and investors. Get direct feedback from professionals.

MIT Enterprise Forum Mentor Night

ESB Building, Room 1001, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.
A professional group of investors who promote a unique process and atmosphere to develop and strengthen the entrepreneurial community in the Central Coast through interaction with experienced executives who have successfully navigated the challenges of building an organization.

“Legal” Mentor Night

All student teams drop in with draft summary of idea for a business and talk with Legal advisors. Get direct feedback from professionals.  

March 7

Tutorial/Workshop on your One Page Summary and Business Plan

ESB Building, Room 1001, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.
This summary determines who will proceed to the semi-finals. Participants will work with an individual advisor this evening after hearing what it takes to express your business/idea

New Venture Business Summary Due
to Katheryn Greenaway at greenaway@engineering.ucsb.edu by 12:00 PM.

A one page summary of your business idea (need, solution, size and attractiveness of opportunity, business model, team, etc.) along with a cover sheet that gives the title of business plan, team member names and addresses (both email and real), phone numbers, Perm numbers, majors.

March 14

“Technology” Mentor Night

ESB Building, Room 1001, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.
All student teams drop in with draft summary of idea for a business and talk with entrepreneurs from a spectrum of technology companies. Get direct feedback from professionals.  

April 4

Semifinalist will be announced on the website
Meet your longer-term mentor

Confer with Katheryn Greenaway
Student teams meet with assigned longer-term mentors to discuss plan drafts.

April 11

Semifinal Venture Fair

5:30-8:30 p.m., ESB, Room 1001.
Please be prepared to outfit a booth (we can provide poster board and table) and give "Elevator Pitches." Include a copy of your preliminary business plan in a red folder. This Fair will decide the top teams that will proceed onto the Final New Venture Competition.  

April 19

BUSINESS PLANS DUE

Submit 6 copies, no more than 20 pages total, no later than noon to Katheryn Greenaway, Harold Frank Hall, Room 1111.

April 20

Additional course on "Pitching"

5:30-8:30 p.m., ESB, Room 1001.
This is a more in-depth review of what students need to have in their presentations for the New Venture Competition. Also, bring 6 printed copies of final completed business plans to ESB no later than 6:00 PM.

April 25

PRACTICE RUNS of Final Presentation

Each finalist team will schedule a 50-minute appointment to test-drive your live presentation for the finals and seek advice on last minute questions on your plan.

April 27

NEW VENTURE COMPETITION FINALS: 3:00-6:30 pm at the
UCen Corwin Pavilion

SEMIFINALISTS!!!
Keep your materials that you have made for the Venture Fair. Be available on the night of the New Venture Competition after the actual competition (6:30-8:00 pm), to set-up booths at the Faculty Club and be prepared to pitch to Angel Investors and VCs that will attend this special event.
